The most expensive cuff links ever were a pair given to King Edward VIII by his wife Wallis Simpson, which were sold at auction for $440,000.
It was customary that a gentleman not buy his own cuff links, but that they should be given to commemorate special occasions.

The National Cufflink Society points to evidence of cuff links found in the hieroglyphics in King Tut’s tomb.
Prior to cuff links, tailors used pins, laces, and straps to keep clothes together. The first cuff links were chains threaded through cuff holes and fastened with a gold or silver button.
